The Meaning of Umrao (उमराव / امراؤ)
The word Umrao has rich historical and linguistic roots in Arabic, Persian, Hindi, and Urdu:
- Noble / Aristocratic: It translates to "noble," "highborn," or "of high social status."
- Lords, Chieftains, or Courtiers: Historically, it is related to the word Amir (meaning prince, leader, or commander). In traditional South Asian contexts, "Umrao" was often used to refer to nobles, noblemen, lords, courtiers, or wealthy landowners (raees).
When used for a place or building name like Umrao Plaza, it evokes a sense of class, elegance, prestige, and high-end royalty.
